A New Orleans-style Revival
Mud Bugs Cajun Kitchen
One of Benchmark’s more dramatic, commercial renovations can be seen at Mud Bugs Cajun Kitchen on Sanibel. The building was originally constructed in the mid-20th century as Café Orleans—a quaint, two-story restaurant with French-style architecture that complemented its Provencal cuisine. The restaurant changed hands over the years, eventually falling into disrepair until most recently purchased by a local restaurateur with an ambitious vision for renovating and reviving the once-neglected structure. Thus, the concept for Mud Bugs Cajun Kitchen was born—a destination restaurant offering diners a colorful, contemporary New Orleans-style ambience with authentic Cajun cuisine unlike any that Sanibel had seen before.

Island Style Relaxation
We were honored to create the first new hotel rooms on the island in more than four decades at a location that vacationers have sought out for more than a century as the premier Sanibel Island hotel and resort destination. Our vision for the resort was to create a seamless fit with the gorgeous beachfront setting. Conveying a feeling of relaxation and connecting with loved ones was paramount at this place known for family vacations, weddings, and romantic getaways.
With this project, we replaced a 12-unit concrete block building built in 1961 with the brand new Matthews Lodge, 12 luxurious suites highlighted by spectacular gulf views. Benchmark also had an opportunity to implement their specialized geothermal cooling system, an effective, green, environmentally-sensitive way to cool the environment.
