Reviving the Legacy of Shalimar Cottages & Motel
Sanibel Island has always been a beloved destination for those seeking a retreat, thanks to its timeless charm and pristine, sandy beaches. Among the most welcoming spots on Sanibel Island has been the Shalimar cottages & motel, where guests could literally step out onto the beach from their doorsteps. Unfortunately, this iconic establishment fell victim to the destructive forces of Hurricane Ian last September.
Benchmark Construction is thrilled to join hands with the present owner, Sean Niesel, to restore this once thriving haven. Sean himself has fond childhood memories of vacationing at Shalimar, a place that was once owned by his grandparents.
His desire is not only to revive the property for other families to create their own cherished vacation memories, but also to pass it down to his children and future generations. As it stands, the property remains in the family, and Sean wishes for it to continue in the same vein.
Hurricane Ian razed the entire property, leaving all 33 rooms in ruins. The intention now is to reimagine the space with a fresh layout and an updated aesthetic. With Benchmark taking the lead in the reconstruction efforts, Sean is hopeful that the project can commence early next year.
The new plan involves using concrete and concrete pilings to fortify the structures, making them resilient to future hurricanes. The redesigned concept should enhance the property’s ability to withstand harsh weather conditions for many years to come. Additionally, discussions are underway with the city of Sanibel to address the new height regulations. Due to flood elevations, everything will need to be elevated as well.
With the updated structure, it was very important to Sean to keep true to the old Florida style. Sanibel Island has always been renowned for its charming cottages and inviting ambiance. Sean is committed to maintaining the essence of the vacation experience he thoroughly treasured during his childhood. This project will help ensure many others get a chance to create the same lasting memories with their families.
